Riding the train to Clarkson - one of the longest journeys here in Perth when I just happen to look up...and there she is.
The doors 'whoosh' open and the wind gently ruffles her hair. She smiles at this and her smile...is so beautiful. She steps lightly onto the train, smiles as she passes people and makes her way to a vacant seat. Her steps are soft, gentle and there is a way about her that speaks of grace and humility.
I like her immediately.
Her hair is straight, glossy, black and just past her toned shoulders. She has caramel-brown skin and is wearing light makeup. Just the right amount of mascara to accentuate her big, brown eyes. A touch of blush on her face and shiny lipgloss on her full lips. She is only small, but very petite and in great shape. Today, she wears faded blue jeans - the expensive kind that you wear for years and years without seeing a hint of damage or tearing. She has black sandals on her small brown feet and a black sleeveless shirt. She has black sunglasses on her head - the ones 'typical Asians' wear - with lenses that are too big for her cute little face. Just simple attire, but classy in it's own way.
I don't mean to stare, but she's just so pretty that I keep watching her. I pretend to read my book but I can't look away. She is so lovely.
The girl chooses a seat by the window and settles her bags around her - a small handbag with a fabric flower on it and another canvas bag which looks to be filled with all manner of junk food. Funny, because to look at her, you would think she eats healthy foods - but the top of a bag of chips sticks out of her bag. She sighs happily as she looks out the window. Her posture is so neat and straight - but with so much ease.
Her phone buzzes and she reaches for it, smiling as she looks at the screen and recognises the name of the caller.
"You're on the mike with Mike" she giggles, pleased with her impression of Will Smith.
She listens and nods, eyes shining with excitement "Yeah I'm on the train now - I'll see you at the station in about 30 minutes"
She rolls her eyes and smiles "Yes, Justin. Okay no worries - see you soon"
She smiles again as she hangs up and puts her phone back in her handbag.
This girl...this beautiful girl...radiates happiness and warmth.
I watch her the entire journey - smiling away to herself, humming under her breath, gently putting her hands through her hair and sometimes wiggling in her seat - as if the excitement is too much for her body to contain.
This is a girl comfortable in her own skin - owning it. Knowing her worth and feeling completely at ease in it. She is mesmerising to observe. Her eyes twinkle and she smiles often - remembering things that make her happy and seemingly really enjoying the train ride.
We arrive at Clarkson - the end of the line. She carefully arranges her bags, picks them up and stands, waiting for a gap to fit into so she can leave with the mounting crowd. An elderly woman is passing but hesitates, stopping to let the girl in. The girls smiles and reaches a hand to her heart "No no, you go ahead" she gestures to the lady, her smile even wider and her face lit up. The lady returns the smile and shuffles forward.
The girl melts into the crowd and slides through the doors easily. I watch her bound up the stairs from the platform and laugh heartily as she recognises her friends in a nearby car. The driver honks loudly and a handsome young man with bright red hair leans out of the passenger-side window and beams a big grin her way "Jay Baby!" he calls.
"Aubs!" she calls back, laughing and reaching for the back door, getting in with her bags and already talking about her day "OMG you guys...you would never believe..."
Her voice carries in the wind, along with a song on the car's stereo as they leave the train station. The car continues around a bend...
And then she is gone.
And I realise I caught a glimpse of myself 8 years ago. A young version of me, on my way to Bible study with Justin, Aubrey and Vicky.
Those were the best days of my life.
I pray they're not over and that the best is yet to come.
